Public liability insurance pays compensation and legal costs if someone makes a claim against your business for injury or property damage caused by your work. For cleaners, that might be a slip on a wet floor, a broken fixture, or water damage from a leak.
What public liability covers
- Injury to customers, visitors and members of the public
- Accidental damage to client or third-party property
- Legal defence costs, even if the claim is unsuccessful
- Products liability for items or treatments you supply
Choosing your limit of indemnity
The limit is the most the insurer will pay for any one claim. Domestic customers rarely specify a limit, but commercial contracts often ask for £1 million, £2 million, £5 million or £10 million. Choose a limit that satisfies your largest contract and reflects the potential cost of a serious injury.
